What?

 คุณทำอะไรเป็นอดิเรก [คุณ|ทำ|อะไร|เป็น|อดิเรก ]

	ทำ	do/make	no tone
	อะไร	what	low – no tone
	เป็น	be/am/are, (in this case: as)	no tone
	อดิเรก	hobby "adirehk"	low-low-emphatic

What are your hobbies? "what do you do as hobby"

 เป็น has many idiomatic meanings. On it's own, it means existence (to be) or  state of being, but it is often used when describing the manner or result of a verb, and before expressions of quantity or periods of time.

It's also used in the same sense as ได้ – to be able to do something.

 เป็นยังไงบ้าง  – How are things? "be how generally"

 เป็นครู  – I am a teacher

 ยังจะเป็นเพื่อนก็ได้ไหม  – We will still be friends, right? "still will be friends ok [question]"

 พูดภาษาอังกฦษเป็นไหม – Can you (are you able to) speak English?

 กินหมูไม่เป็น – I can't eat pork "eat pig not able to"

 แต่เล่นเปียโนเป็น – but I can play the piano 

 Compare this with คือ is, but which is more accurately translated as is defined as.

 นกแก้วคือนก – A parrot ["glass bird"] is a bird.

 คือว่า –  that is to say…, for instance…

 ภาษาที่สองคือภาษาอะไร – What's your second language? "language second is language what?"
